AI Methods for Analyzing GMMP 2025 Annotated Radio Data [GMMAI]
The Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) is the leading international study on the representation of women in news media.
Since 1995, it has been conducted every five years, and in 2020 it brought together 112 countries to analyze radio, television, print, and online news content. The project is supported by UN Women to help inform public policies on gender equality.
The MSI supports the collaboration between the LIRCES and I3S research labs to prepare these data and turn them into a rich, publishable dataset, paving the way for the development of AI-based automated approaches. The work involves preprocessing radio data—addressing the challenges posed by the unreliability of current AI models for this type of content—as well as implementing state-of-the-art baseline models for interpretive question analysis.
In the medium term, the goal is for this project to break ground in interdisciplinary exploration and support the development of advanced AI approaches for studying complex psychosocial constructs in the media: the rise of far-right discourse, racialization, gender representation, and inclusive language.
